When fiberglass started to make inroads into the recreational boating market in the 1950s and ’60s, it was hailed as a wonder material that was virtually maintenance-free. Many boat brochures promised that it would never need painting. In fact, fiberglass does need some maintenance, and the time comes when wax, rubbing compounds, and restorers can no longer bring back that showroom shine. This was certainly true of Castaway, the Ericson 34 Bailout boat, so as part of her makeover, the Waterline crew gave her topsides a completely new look with a sprayed-on paint finish.
