2005 Boating Writers International Awards

Six SAIL and BoatWorks writers were recognized for excellence in journalism at the recent Boating Writers International annual award ceremony held during the Miami International Boat Show in Florida. In the 13th year of the contest, awards were given in 14 categories for “excellence in creating compelling stories about the boating lifestyle through entertaining, educational, and inspiring journalism.” SAIL and BoatWorks writers won in the Boating Lifestyles, Technical Writing, Boat Tests and the Gear, Electronics and Product Test categories.

Deputy Editor Josh Adams won 1st place in the Boat Tests category for “The Boat to Beat,” about racing “box rules” and the Transpac 52 as the new international development class of choice (May 2005 SAIL). Editor Peter Nielsen won 3rd place in the Technical category for “The Wheel Thing,” about how to convert from tiller to wheel steering, published in Spring 2005 BoatWorks.

Charles J. Doane wrote “Descent to the Underworld,” a humorous piece about “the Bilge Gods” in the Spring 2005 issue of BoatWorks, and Tom Cunliffe wrote “Passing It On,” a story about sailors helping other sailors in need (January 2005 SAIL). Both received merit awards.

Dave Baldwin and Bill Springer won certificates of merit with “Catboats Get the Vote” about daysailing traditional cat-rigged sailboats on Cape Cod (March 2005 SAIL) and the “Hunter 430” boat test in the Winter 2005 BoatWorks, respectively.
