Computer Prep

In the January issue of SAIL, Tim Hasson tells us how to prepare a computer for sea duty. Here’s a step-by-step guide to fine-tuning your PC’s settings.

Error Reporting

1. Click “Start”
2. Select “Settings” > “Control Panel”
3. Choose “System” Icon
4. Select the “Advanced” Tab
5. Click on the “Error Reporting” Button (at bottom of box)
6. Check “Disable Error Reporting”
7. Check “But Notify Me When Critical Errors Occur”


Automatic Updates

1. Click “Start”
2. Select “Settings” > “Control Panel”
3. Choose “System” Icon
4. Select the “Automatic Updates” Tab
5. Check “Turn Off Automatic Updates”


Anti-Virus “Live Update”

Anti-Virus updates depend on the software you are using. Consult your manual.


Power Management

1. Click “Start”
2. Select “Settings” > “Control Panel”
3. Choose “Display” Icon
4. Select the “Screen Saver” Tab
5. On the “Screen Save” drop-down menu, choose “None”


6. Click on the “Power” Button
7. Make sure that “Power Scheme” is set to “Always On”
8. In the “Plugged In” column, set all settings to “Never”
9. In the “Running on Batteries” column (laptop users) set the appropriate values. 1 hour is good starting point


Display White Background

1. Click “Start”
2. Select “Settings” > “Control Panel”
3. Choose “Display” Icon
4. Select the “Desktop” Tab
5. Select Background: “None,” Color: “White”


Mouse Cursor

1. Click “Start”
2. Select “Settings” > “Control Panel”
3. Choose “Mouse” Icon
4. Click on “Pointers” Tab
5. Under “Scheme,” choose one of the Windows Black options (Windows Black-Large works well)


System Restore Point

1. Click “Start”
2. Scroll up to “Programs” > “Accessories” >”System Tools” > “System Restore”
3. Check the box for “Set a Restore Point," not the default "Restore my computer to an earlier time"
