Parking Problems on the Subcontinent

What has warm winds, a booming economy, 5,000 miles of coastline, a booming economy and a young population?

India.

In an extensive report on livemint.com, an India-focused arm of the Wall Street Journal, Jeni Bone reports that boat shows there are producing cart-before-the-horse results. As Bone calls it, "a parking problem."

Buyers in India have spent US$9.4 million on boats since the country's first boat show—last year.

Bone writes, "The quayside off Mumbai’s Gateway of India is already clogged with boats of all sizes, uses, and types, and people frequently jump from one vessel to another to reach their own. Prior to the boat show, there were around 20 to 30 pleasure boats here; post-event, there are more than 100.

" 'It’s the typical Indian mentality…first they buy Porsches, then they think of roads,' says Malav Shroff, publisher of India’s first trade magazine, India Boating, and chief executive of Mumbai-based Ocean Blue Marinas and Boat Haven Pvt. Ltd, which also organizes the boat show."

India is now a stop on the Volvo Ocean Race itinerary, which is likely to attract new eyeballs to the sport, and marina developers are looking to such ports as Goa, Chennai, and Kochi.
